Little Knowledge is Dangerous

When we listen to people’s idea or his lecture or talk, it is needless to say how important is to understand his or her credibility, dedication, and achievements over the years. Like for instance, when we listen to 14th Dalai Lama, there is high credibility, dedication and achievements for the last 60 years in struggle against Chinese government, keeping alive the issue of Tibet internationally, welfare of Tibetans not only in India, Nepal & Bhutan, but also in United States and many other countries in Europe. Let me not mention here the efforts and contribution of His Holiness in promoting human values and religious harmony worldwide.

The point I am making here is that, are there any Tibetan alive as of today, who could have more knowledge, experience, and people’s mandate that will guide us through politically and spiritually, with pure love and compassion, other than His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama?

If we really believe His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is the soul and identity of six million Tibetans, then people like Jamyang Norbu is clearly playing with his beautiful words to change that. We can understand why Chinese government tries to criticize His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration, but why people like Jamyang Norbu tries to do the same in our midst again and again?

In his October 31st written blog titled “The said painful joke of Tibetan democracy”, he has not only tried to criticize His Holiness, but also tries to demoralize the very foundation of Tibetan struggle. Those who are little attracted to what he writes must please try to analyze the situation of the CTA and the Tibetan in exile, especially in India.

Different people has different perception, and therefore, when one read his comparison of Tibetan democracy with Bhutan democracy; the author knows but why he cares that the situation with which the evolution of democracy in Bhutan and for Tibetan in exile are being taking place are little different. For instance, Bhutan is a complete free country, and functions in its own country, and has no immediate political or cultural threat from outside, whereas the Tibetan exile’s situation is completely the opposite.

He hinted that having political parties in Tibetan political system would then be called real democracy and a vibrant and dynamic one as well. If he is a responsible person, then he must also know that knowledge and idea must also have an appropriate time and situation to perform. Does he care about the consequences of forming Tibetan political parties in India from the Indian government’s point of view? Does he care about the consequences of complete shutdown of CTA over the issue of such political parties? Does he care about understanding the reason behind why His Holiness the Dalai Lama repeatedly said that we do not need political parties?

I would love to attend if he teaches History classes online with pure academic without any twisted information and comparison, because he is quite a learned man.

But it is a time that he should leave the political things to be handled by most vibrant and democratic elected leadership in Dharamsala with a mandate of Tibetans in Tibet through His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

  1. I have read the article "The Sad painful joke of Tibetan Democracy" and did not find a single instance where Jamyang la has criticized His Holiness, your dishonesty in trying to make this false argument is pitiful and I would advice Jamyang la that he would be well served to take you up on slander.
As for your argument on Democracy, the less said the better as your piece clearly shows your lack of understanding on this subject.

  3. Jamyang Norbu's family and all his crony kudra elitist are safely in Ari, so he and his immediate will not suffer the wrath of changing political attitude of Indian government. Many exiles fail to see that, because of their ignorance, they are emotionally taken advantage of it by people like Jamyang Norbu. I would really like to see a confrontation between Indian government and Tibetan exiles. Already, there are signs that Indians might drive out Tibetans like Nurse cannot practice nursing as profession. Shichak lands are only leased for 100 years or so......maybe these the sufferers will be the common people. I really wanted to see such a scenario and will check how the man of no-action but empty talks from land of hill-billies will blow the conch shell for his fellow exiles.

  4. Anonymous " why are you complaining that the "Sichak lands are only leased for 100 years" when land in China are only leased between 40 to 70 years depending on the purpose of use! now if you are planning to return to China under the Middle Way Approach then you might as well live in India and profit from an extra 30 to 60 years as a land owner.

  7. Ngawang Yonten. you seems to know more history than Jamyang ? Would you care to explain what consequences would follow if Tibetans in India form political parties ? When did Indian government threatened to shut down CTA over the issue of political parties ? we would love to know more about this theory and in particular I would love to know which political party was in government when this threat was made ?

  9. Ngawang Yonten. Point me a single case where there is no dissension in a democracy? Where is the check and balances ? there is no point of introducing democracy and celebrating democracy day each year if we can't embrace criticism whether it is constructive or not ? Or are we as an exile Tibetan wants to follow the so-called Chinese or North Korean democracy whereby there is no electoral mandate of the people, where political dissension are swiftly clamped out? Adopting democracy itself is a tough road and by no means an easy job as we all might assume,

  15. The Dalai Lama never said that Tibetans in exile don't need political parties as you claimed. At the contrary, if we believe the NDPT's documents, in 1990 he urged the Tibetan Youth Congress to take the initiative to form a party (http://bit.ly/1bnztRh). The Dalai Lama only declared that when it comes to political parties, he would prefer "that monks and nuns not join — in order to ensure proper democratic practice." (http://bit.ly/1ey6UWr). Note that in this interview, he also stated that the "Dalai Lama should not be partisan either, should remain above”, something which he's clearly not doing as Jamyang Norbu wrote…

As for Bhutan democracy, even Bhuchung K. Tsering, a strong supporter of the Middle Way Approach, gave it as an exmple for Tibet in a blog post of 2010 entitled "The Nature of Tibetan Democracy, by looking at Bhutan" (http://bit.ly/bNXMpT).

DHARAMSHALA: Former Kalon Tripa Prof Samdhong Rinpoche has said those who do not support the Middle-Way Policy are not against His Holiness the Dalai Lama, as the policy is not imposed by him but democratically adopted by the Tibetan people and the Parliament-in-Exile.

Prof Rinpoche made the remarks at a two-day conference of Tibetan People’s Movement for Middle Way last week, underlining the importance of removing the misconception that those advocating Independence for Tibet are against His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

  21. JN's view on political party in Tibetan exile is just a bull shed. When TYC discuss idea of forming a political party in 1991 he is one of the most vocal person among former Centrex member of TYC and he argued that TYC must lead to form a political party in exile. When TYC formed Tibetan Democratic Party in 1994 he declined to become one of the Executive of Party and since he has no connection with Tibetan Democratic Party. He says something and does other. In 1980 he formed Tibetan Democratic Party with couple of member and after couple years the his Democratic party died due to lack of support. Other issue is he always criticize officials of CTA but when people say something against him or his ideology he always point on them as people against "Rangzen or Democracy".

  23. Ngawang Youten la, your childish essay is so sad and reflects your brain washed mentality. Most Tibetans' devotion to the Dalai Lama is no different from Chinese Red Guards’ devotion to Mao or North Koreans worship of Kim Jong-un. Such fanatical devotion is born out of years of brain washing in Tibetan schools and settlements. The Tibetans are quick to accuse the Chinese of being brain washed, but in reality it is the Tibetans in exile who are totally brain washed and lost any ability to have critical appreciation of arguments and ideas. The Tibetan issue is doomed to fail, because the Tibetans' worship of leadership rather than the cause of Tibet. In your post, you asked the question are there any other Tibetans who inspire and lead the Tibetan people, the answer is “no” because, in a society where there is a blind devotion to a leader and absent of genuine democracy, no is allowed to have independent voice and thugs like you will be quick to label anyone who thinks diffently as the enemy of the leader.

Jamyang Norbu is the only courageous and critical thinker in Tibetan society. In fact Jamyang Norbu is a true follower of the Dalai Lama’s teaching. The Dalai Lama always says we should examine and question everything. Therefore, Jamyang la is putting in practicing the Dalai Lama teaching. Despite, Tibetan thugs like you constantly harassing and intimidation, he has the honesty and audacity to express his view. In history or in 10 years time, Jamyang Norbu will be proved to correct and rest of you will look back and ask where did we go wrong or why didn’t we listen to him. This has been the sad fate of the Tibetan people!

  24. By the way, you are the one with little knowledge. Compare to Jamyang la, you are intellects midget. Guessing from your current position the article is written for a selfish reason and gain promotion in the exile bureaucratic ladder.

  25. "Leave the political things to be handled by most vibrant and democratic elected leadership in Dharamsala", spoke just like a faithful Communist Party member, and leave to the wise leadership of the Party, as masses are too stupid to understand. He is just a chamcha currying favour to gain promotion. Let see Ngawang Yoten gets his promotion.

In most democratic society civil services should remain neutral and unbiased in their views. Is it allowed that paid CTA stuff should be writing blog attacking ordinary Tibetans? Fact that the author is a serving staff at the Office of Tibet in NY, it is assumed that the opinion expressed is a reflection the view of Office of Tibet in NY or the CTA. IF not the Office of Tibet must issue a statement disassociating from the post and reprimand the author. A failure to do so means that senior leaders in CTA are encouraging chamcha to write blogs to attack Tibetans who express any independent opinions.
